Movement Should Support Your Health & Well-Being?

12/14/2022

Picture
I feel now, more than ever, that people are disconnected from what it means to have a movement & training practice that will support there health and well-being.

We know that humans are designed to move! Why does there seem to be a physical decline?

I wanted to take a look back through fitness history to paint a picture and potentially provoke your approach and way of thinking towards fitness, health and how & why you choose to move.

The History Of Physical Fitness

I am starting from the 20th century, as this marked the rise of specialised, competitive sports, as well as the emergence of a well organised and thriving “fitness” market and industry.

At the very beginning of the 20th century, Georges Hebert developed and promoted his “Natural Method,” another Frenchman, Professor Edmond Desbonnet, managed to make physical exercise and strength training fashionable through the publication of fitness journals and by opening a chain of exercise clubs.
This laid a strong foundation for physical culture in Europe,
but also for “fitness” as an industry.
  • The aerobic dance movement brought intentional exercise to the forefront. Aerobic dance became a pop culture phenomenon—in 1982, Jane Fonda’s Workout Book

  • The 1990s led to Mr Motivator on morning TV in the UK and the development and popularity of many other forms of group exercise. Water exercise, spinning classes, stationary indoor cycling, yoga and many other kinds of group activities surfaced. People seemed to become more health-conscious as awareness grew in the 90s.

  • Fast forward to today where group exercise has grown into a diverse offering, providing options for almost every ability and preference. Providing an outlet for many people to exercise in a groups & building community.
Over the course of a century, thousands of methods and programs have emerged,
all promising to get you in the best shape of your life in the quickest amount of time possible

The Current State of Physical Culture: Lost in Fitness

A Thought Provoking Excerpt From The Article Written By MovNat founder Erwan Le Corre.
As we reflect on the evolution of fitness over the centuries, and the different facets present in our modern physical culture, it is well to ask ourselves: what have we lost, and what have we gained?

Obviously, much good has come out of these recent developments: there’s widespread awareness of the importance of regular exercise, nearly every community has a gym where people can work out, and we understand more about how the human body works and responds to physical training than we ever have before.

Yet despite the plethora of health and fitness methods, programs, and resources, the general population has never been so physically sedentary and out-of-shape.

Which bring’s me to the point of writing and sharing this blog!
Through our own involvement in the fitness industry, mixing with different fitness and movement cultures
all over the world, our self practices, experinces and personal training experimentations.
It has come so ever more prevalent, that this mass evolution in fitness,
has caused an overwhelming misunderstanding of what its means to be fit & healthy.

'I feel now, more than ever, that people are disconnected from what it means,
to have a movement & training practice that will support there health and well-being.'

In some instances it has become more of a chore, a type of punishment that forces you into guilt tripping the ever needing desire, for all of the transformation promises made. A counter-intuitive mindset to have, on how movement and training should be approached?

There is so much information out there, often leaving an overwhelming feeling of confusion on what is the ‘right way’ to lead a 'healthy lifestyle' or how you should be moving your own body?

'This very problem, is what is causing, a lack of self connection to know and understand what,
YOU need to support yourself as a whole. Keeping you on the hamster wheel of movement un-satisfaction.
'

The most common perception or belief of what it means to be fit,
and the primary motivation for exercising, is to look fit!

It is no longer about feeling good, having a healthy body that can actually move well.
Not forgetting the abundance of longterm benefit's that moving our bodies has on our biological system.

There is too much emphasis and validation for quick fixes, short term results, which all fail to provide important foundations or pillars that create's a sustainable movement & training practice. And ultimately has a fundamental role to play, in having a healthier way of life:
1) The mindset & movement relationship   2) The value & the benefits of having a longterm process

We understand the enjoyment of doing fitness for fitness sake.
But at the cost of your health, is where we believe there needs to be a new approach taken.

Bone Broth and Fitness Recovery with Osius

10/13/2022

Picture
Back in 2019 we wrote a blog in collaboration with Osius Bone Broth talking all things recovery and why bone broth was a big part of our recovery protocol.

To this day as company director's and creators of our own fitness program Kinisi Flow, bone broth is still apart our weekly nutrition and it's been one of the best additions in terms of longevity for health.

Find out why below.

Bone Broth For Recovery

What is Bone Broth
Bone broth is full of collagen, gelatine and amino acids like glycine, which can all assist with things common amongst those who lead active lifestyles like healing soft tissue injuries and digestive stress; bone broth also helps to replace electrolytes, which is another reason why many people use it pre/post workout. We spoke to Natalie Constanti, a fitness instructor and trainer who trains extensively every week about how she and her partner use bone broth and intermittent fasting for fitness recovery.

Recover Smart
As fitness professionals, we lead very active lifestyles from teaching weekly fitness classes, travelling to teach workshops and on top of that we workout intensively multiple times a week. With such active lifestyles, we need to make sure that we prioritise our recovery methods to ensure that we invest in ourselves.

There are multiple ways to help recovery from ensuring you get quality sleep, good nutrition from quality sourced ingredients, daily breath work and movement.

In addition to these things, we like to use bone broth as part of our weekly recovery protocol. We know that bone broth provides the building blocks for repair, as it is full of gelatine, collagen and amino acids which are all essential components for recovery. After an intense workout, you'll want to replace electrolytes, hydrate, and provide your body with a quality source of protein. Drinking bone broth supports your digestion and immunity, and the natural collagen and glycine may assist with soft tissue recovery.

We prefer to drink a bone broth after a workout, sometime's fasted (read below why) and we aim for twice a week. Unless we have home made a batch, then it probably going to be drink it everyday! Alternatively you can drink it with your meal, before bed for a good nights sleep or just as a hot yummy drink of pure goodness.
Training Fasting & Bone Broth
One of the things we have found from research is to drink bone broth in conjunction when either intermittent fasting or after more prolonged fasts. There are many benefits of fasting, such as Autophagy - the recycling of cells, and also breaking a fast with bone broth. But there is an important reason why you want to break a fast with bone broth!

After fasting, you increase your insulin sensitivity and decrease insulin overall in the body. So when you eat, your body will attach and hold onto anything you consume, making you more sensitive to the nutrients. By breaking your fast with bone broth, it means that you can utilise all of the benefits that bone broth has to offer - you are in a prime position to get the quality nutrients and quality natural collagen, as you can absorb and utilise them a lot better.

Conclusion

The term ‘superfood’ gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of bone broth we believe it’s true! From improving your gut health, strengthening your immune system and helping to reduce inflammation, bone broth helps in reaping those all important recovery gains, especially as part of a balanced lifestyle.

There are definitely some natural bio hacks habits that we will not be giving up on anytime soon and one of them is drinking a cup of bone broth. You really cant beat the old school health hacks that have been around for millennia. The  benefits one reaps, goes far beyond any other health hack, in fact you get more bang for you buck in our opinion (which we will delve into in another blog)

 Recommendations

When shopping for bone broth we highly recommend the following brands
  • Organic Borough Broth we buy the low food map version as it has less oxilaites  www.boroughbroth.co.uk
  • Osius Bone Broth www.osiusbonebroth.co.uk
  • Ossa Organic used code KINISI15 www.ossaorganic.com
They all offer home delivery. The bone broth will come frozen and you can store it in your freezer until you wish to  defrost and drink when convenient. Please bare in mind the bone broth still has a used by date!offer home deliver.  Please bare in mind the bone broth still has a used by date!

Alternatively you can make your own which is cheaper and not difficult to make. We would suggest experimenting with making your own and see what works best for you.

Barefoot Shoe's - Where Fashion Meets Function!

9/29/2022

 Good Day Folks

Today is the day we get to share some exciting news with you all.
And guess what, you too get to benefit from it.
In-fact more specifically, your foot health and over-well-being will thank you for it.

Kinisi Fit Ltd is happy to announce our new brand collaboration with Bohempia. This is a brand new barefoot company who are leading the way with there barefoot shoe collection but this time where fashion meets barefoot function!

As you know we are both HUGE advocates of barefoot shoes, having wore them for well over a decade and educating on the benefits of barefoot shoes.

Part 1 - Let's Talk Foot Health

Your foot consists of
10 tendons
19 muscles
26 bones
33 joints
107 ligaments
Approx 200,000 nerv endings
Feet have carried humans through life without additional support for thousands of years. The need for constant foot support in the form of stiff shoes is a modern plague, and one that largely affects the developed world. But we know that feet aren’t fundamentally flawed. Rather our modern lifestyles are. Excessive sitting combined with restrictive shoes from an early age put a real damper on our ability to move freely.

You see, your feet are engineered for movement & sensory feedback, so why would you want to lose this and put them into foot coffins for the sake of fashion!

Our feet are our foundation and play a massive role in everything we do from a movement perspective. They are involved in many humans things we  do, from walking, running, skipping, jumping, absorbing, balancing, lifting, squatting etc. And the function of our feet has a HUGE impact on our bodies. There is a kinetic chain running from our big toes, through our arch, up our legs and into the hips and spine that affects everything we do as humans. Yet are often neglected and tucked away in un-foot shaped shoes which often lead to poor foot mechanics and foot health as they can’t truly perform as a human foot is designed to.
Picture
Wearing barefoot shoes is one way to improve foot health as:

  1. It provides better connection to the floor which allows the feet to move freely and work as intended, splay, grip & absorb.
  2. It helps to develop foot resilience/strength which can mitigate foot, ankle and knee injuries
  3. Less joint pain from having a good foundation and a properly working functioning foot.
  4. No more squished toes, blisters or painful feet from forcing your feet into un-natural shoe shaped shoe’s

Part 2 - Fashion Meets Function

For all our fashion conscious lovers out there. We are happy to share with you a new brand called Bohempia barefoot shoes who are leading the way with there barefoot shoe collection but this time where fashion meets barefoot function.
Picture
Picture
Not only that but Bohempia are made from hemp - which makes them an environmentally friendly sustainable option! As hemp is a renewable resource that is naturally strong, breathable, and antimicrobial. So the shoes are not harmful to the environment, or to your body!

Yes, it’s time to throw away your narrow cult classic’s like converse and vans as they have the perfect replacement for stylish sneakers, that will look just as cool but without the squished toes!

'Personally, I have long been searching for barefoot alternatives
to those brand names and Bohempia has done just that.'
Picture

Part 3- Benefits of wearing Barefoot Bohempia Shoes:

  • Foot shaped shoe - This allows your toes to spread out naturally instead of being pinched together. I love the wide toe box of the Bohemia style you can really feel your foot able to splay out and move naturally.

  • Thin & Flexible – The thick padding on other sneakers prevents your foot from sensing the ground and moving with its environment. While Bohempia shoes are not paper thin, the sole is much thinner than it looks and they allow for a more natural experience when walking and standing.

  • Sizing - As avid barefoot wearer myself, I found the shoe true to size and very spacious, which I love.  However, I would suggest if your not used to wearing barefoot shoes, to get your foot measured before ordering so that you find the correct barefoot size for you. You can check out the size chart on how to measure your feet.

  • Comfort - This is a non-negotiable when it comes to footwear and Bohempia's sneaker has passed the the 3 rule test! There's are 3 assessments of comfort when it comes to wearing wearable sneakers which are:
1) Your foot and toes are not squished
2) No rubbing or blisters from wearing the sneaker
3) How much connection & feedback there is in relation to the floor.

  • Style - Bohempia are most definitely leading the way in term's of barefoot fashion! The sneaker is stylish and an essential part of everyone's capsule wardrobe. These sneakers will take you through from season too season, which is what we call a "forever piece" as you can style it with pretty anything in your wardrobe. You can watch a video here

Conclusion

Bohempia is the place to look if you want a barefoot shoe that looks like a classic sneaker. You get to look good, feel good, and have a clean conscious, thanks to their sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing.

Born to Move ? - What If?

4/20/2022

Movement For Health - Born To Move
Picture
"Our bodies have become restricted due to
environmental, physical & mental constraints.

We are Literally Made to Move!

That's how our bodies transport nourishment to every cell.
We require constant movement to keep them supple and oiled."

- Michael Dean
An excerpt from the Kinisi Flow® manual

We know movement benefits us and every aspect of our body but If we think about the bodies architecture - fascia, joints, muscles and its biological requirement for movement, we begin to understand the importance for 'Movement for Health'.

The Bodies Architecture
  • Fascia is the biological fabric that holds us together. This connective tissue network is made up of neurons, muscle cells, epithelia, all humming in relative harmony. Fascia usually slides and glides as we move, however when the tissue becomes tight and fibrotic from a lack of movement, the ability to move freely and pain-free is reduced.
  • A Joint, also called an articulation, are designed to move. The majority of joints are structured in such a way that they allow movement. It's through movement they get their nourishment.
  • Muscles act on synovial joints to move the body. Without movement the synovial fluid becomes stagnant.

It's quite clear that movement is non-negotiable
We need it to transport nourishment, keep oiled and stay supple.

Therefore, this goes beyond our exercise & fitness solutions, that we believe is of service to our longevity of health. Don't get us wrong, we very much enjoy the training environment, as former amateur athletes ourselves.

But what if, we are viewing it all wrong?
What if, we viewed movement, as our medicine?
Would it change how we choose to move. How we spend our time moving. Would it all be different?

Something to read

Here is a short read from Katy Bowman's work, who shares a wonderful eye opening piece on this very topic.

READ: What If We Got Exercise All Wrong?
(Reading Time: ~3-4minutes)

“Thus we treat exercise as medicine for poor habits. We construct chairs for weak spines and bulging middles, we drive a few blocks instead of walking—and since we barely walk, we pad our feet in sneakers that produce anatomical nightmares up the posterior chain to our neck—and then we hope four or five hours a week on a treadmill will even the playing field.”"If we can convert some of the extra time we spend on exercise that benefits only us and maybe start using that movement to accomplish something more than just the movement, you would be extracting more nutrition, if you will, from your bout of movement."

'Movement should be something that you’re doing all of the time for yourself. That is the natural relationship of a human to movement. It’s like saying that breakfast is medicine for starvation. It’s not medicine; it’s just food. You’re supposed to be eating; it’s a biological requirement. The same holds true for movement."
